All my tracks use the same instrument

Hello, I have Sonar 2.0 and a Roland XV-5050. I use the 5050's editor to change patches. But when I go to the next track and choose a different patch, my first track also changes to the new patch. Do I need to change a channel in the 5050 as well as in Sonar? If so, how? If not, then what should I do? Thanks.

Each track must have it's own midi channel. If you want 16 different instruments you must have each assigned to it's own channel. You should be able to make all the channel assignments in Sonar and the sound module should respond properly.

Thankyou for your reply acidrock. I've changed the "IN" channel...the one that says "MIDI Omni" on the rolldown. And I've changed the "CH" that says a number then "<default>" when I click on it. They both show all 16 channels but when I change my second track to channel 2 on "IN" it still changes channel ones instrument. And when I change track 2's "CH" channel it simply won't play sound at all. Again thanks for your help. I hope you can understand.

The In setting isn't the issue here, it just needs to jibe with what your XV-5050 is sending on. The issue is on the end responding to the MIDI messages SONAR is sending out. That is, the 5050 also has to be set to respond to the different channels with different patches.

Set Midi In to "Midi Omni" and let it stay there. Sonars midi-in capabilities is not the greatest...

Thanks Alchuck and Moskus. So what I should do is keep all my tracks set to "midi omni" and only change the channels labeled "ch"? And I need to find out how to change the channels in my XV-5050 and then I need to find out what channel to change it to, so that it will respond properly with Sonar. Am I correct? And Moskus what do you mean by Sonars midi in isn't the best? What is it lacking and what would you prefer? Thanks again.

ajari,

I haven't used a XV-5050 before, however are you making the patch changes on the actual unit or from within Sonar.

I've got a Roland JV-1010. When making the changes on the actual unit you couldn't actually 'set' a patch to a channel. You would set up a bank with say piano being the first patch and strings being the second. Then when playing back through Sonar you would set the Piano to MIDI channel 1 and the Strings to MIDI channel 2.

Hope that makes sense and helps you,

Porter

I use Cakewalk ProAudio not Sonar, but it should be similar. Set your source to "Midi Omni" this is the INPUT to the track. Next set the "midi channel" to something. Create a template of say 16 tracks and set each track's midi channel from 1-16. Probably the most important thing missing is an "instrument definition" so you can tell Sonar the instrument on the track is a XV-5050, that way you'll be able to set the patch, volume, panning, etc, all within Sonar. Just make sure to set your XV-5050 to "performance" mode, not patch mode. You'll notice a slight difference in the tones when using mutli-timbral mode. (performance mode) This is due to the limited number of fx that can be used at the same time. Take some time, read the manuals, help files, etc. It's well worth a weekend of reading to learn about your gear. :)

Hey porter, homeuser, great advice guys! You really helped me out alot. The 5050 uses an editor software but the manual only covers the actual physical interface of the 5050. So I was a little lost. Once you understand how to navigate through the editor its way easier. That and a little knowhow about how MIDI works and how channels are set up. Thanks!
