All I wanna do is hear some sound...

OK, here's the deal. Audiophile USB and a Celeron 1.8 GHz Dell w/ 256 MB RAM. I installed card according to the instructions and all went well. Sonar 1.0.2 was already on the PC but it hadn't been used. I was waiting till I got the soundcard. For right now I'll be using the system to archive some audio from cassette onto my hard drive and then dump that to CD. I came out of the cassette deck into the audiophile's RCA inputs. When I open Sonar though I keep getting this message that says: "The following drivers either do not support the current audio format, or are in use by another application. Please choose whether you want to disable them or use them anyway." Then it lists my M-Audio Audiophile USB Line and SPDIF drivers twice. I choose to use them and open a new file and set the inputs to the M-Audio (when it let's me). Sometimes it says there are no inputs available. I'll start a new file and then all of the sudden they'll show up but I still have yet to hear any audio from the cassette deck. Oh yeah, I'm using headphones to monitor and the system sounds work through there. They said this would be so easy.......(Where's my gun?!?!!?)
 
First off I would upgrade Sonar to 1.31 (I think that was the last version before 2.0).

Secondly, what drivers are you using for the Audiophile?

Do you also have an onboard sound card? It sounds like maybe you are using WDM drivers for you onboard card, but don't have WDM drivers for your Audiophile.
 
Driver Provider for the M-Audio Audiophile DFU is Nemesis version 1.5.4.6. I went to the website and downloaded the latest XP driver and when I went back in to uninstall the existing one it was the same .exe version as the one that I got from the website. Yes, I do have an onboard sound card and I went into the CMOS to disable it but it was nowhere on the menu. I thought about uninstalling the driver for it but I was afraid that might cause even more problems.
As far as the WDM drivers are concerned, I thought it asked something about using WDM when I installed and I said yes to that.
What's the difference between WDM and MME drivers anyway? Oh, and thanks for your help.

WDM is the new Windows Driver Model, which allows low latency. MME is getting pretty old, and doesen't allow low latency...

If you search this forum I'm sure you'll find some better explanation than that. :rolleyes: :D
 
Here's some things you might try.

1. Go to Options > Audio > Drivers and disable your onboard sound card.

2. Go to Options > Audio > Advanced and check the box for Share Drivers with Other Programs.

3. Go to Options > Audio > Advanced and check the box for Always Use MME Drivers.

Try these one at a time in the above order. After each change, reprofile your sound card and exit and reenter Sonar. See if one of them works for you.

OK, I finally got signal coming in and was able to record from the cassette to the hard drive so that's all cool. I think it was the "Always Use MME drivers" option that got me going. Again, thanks for your help. I've got other questions but I'll start a new thread for those.
