yes
I'm making this topic because, i think its time that people appreciate the bass, because, well the truth is, its just as important as guitar and drums. you can hear how much you need bass, when its not there. I play gutiar, i can play a little bass, nothing incredible or anything. just enough to get the job done.

I just though we should take this time to appreciate it.

anyone agree?

i play bass. i enjoy it much. i also play guitar and drums. bass is most fun.

Yes they always look my way when I STOP playing, their facial expression says "Wow, You really are part of the sound."

thats what i mean. my little brother wants to play but most of the time he cant even hear the bass.

As a bass player I feel that bass is important to good sound, but it is not the end-all-be-all that other instruments are.

It is usually an important part of the sound, but it is only a part. Rhythm guitar, piano, or some other chord instrument is crucial for filling up the bulk of the sound. You need something to fill out the sound and something for a melody line. Everything else is just frosting (though in the case of a good bass line, especially delicious frosting!)

Good topic. Thanks for the appreciation.

I just want to add, as a guitarist, a good bass player really makes my job a lot easier. I have always considered the bass line as the "backbone" of most music, a solid bass part is what holds things together. If you really want to appreciate a bass player, try playing in a 3 piece band with just guitar, drums and of course bass.

the whole reason i made this was because when i record, it doesnt really come to life until you put the bass in. makes al the difference in the world.

[it doesnt really come to life until you put the bass in.]] I couldn't have worded it any better!!!!

Have you just noticed this? Every instrument is just as important as every other!
Bass is just as important as guitar, piano, accordian, triangle - whatever!

I have played in a band for 5 years with a drummer, bass player, singer and just me on guitar and I totally agree with you Dani that you will notice how good your bass player is or isn't in this set up.

My latest acquisition.... :D

Drums, Guitar, tiny bit of Sax. Not a Bass in sight :)

Being a drummer I get used to all the 'Bass and Drums are retard's instrument' comments, and I'm a huge Nirvana fan - I'd like to see that power without a Rhythm section :D

You hit the nail on the head. The bass is a rhythm instrument. Although Primus, Billy Sheehan, Man-O-War et al, have made it a lead instrument also. The bass holds the bottom end. Without it, your music would sound thin and hollow. My main instrument is bass. I have an ESP B-205 5-string that I always refer to as "my baby".

Hey Dogman, welcome to the 5-string club :) me and Q got that bug from Jamfest 5 when we played one that was really sweet.

too bad the dude who brought it wasn't there at 6...i'd love to try it again after a year later and having gotten one of my own.

i started listening a lot more to bass since playing more lately.

a lot of big important songs of all time have some really serious bass lines that are the hook, or open the song, or are really prominant and can't live without.

even some totally acoustic guitar tunes have serious bass lines either played on the guitar or doubled on a bass that you have to listen really close to even notice that they're there.

and a lot of the riff songs need the support/doubling

The thing I like most about being a bass player is having the ability to tell people honestly that I'm not a drummer.

That alone gives me a little musical credibility.

But.......but............................you ARE a drummer!?!

So much for credibility.
