alien mind

Wow. That is one of the most unique vocal deliveries I've heard in a while. Is that just the way you're manipulating your voice, or is there some creative processing there too? You've got some stones to put it out there all up front and relatively dry like that.

The guitar tones are beautiful.

What did you do during the solo section? Some lo fi processing of some kind? It's cool. There's little bits of sounds that come and go...very inventive. See, there's that thinking outside the box you've been talking about. It works here!

It's an odd track in that the music itself is kind of conventional in nature, but the vocals, combined with the strange processing during the solo section make it all very unique. Plenty to pick out on each subsequent listen...thanks.

I don't know if it works, but I had fun with it. I actually like how the vocal 'character' falls away at some places and my ordinary voice sneaks through. I tried singing it straight on different occasions and it always came out as bland as bland. So this weekend I thought okay the song's about things that are alien so make your voice alien to what it is. This is the closest I've come to a keeper vocal for this one. With the exception of one guitar, all the rest - the drum programming, bass, liquid guitar, keyboard, bvs and alien sound effects - are the product of the fertile imagination of Tjarko Busink. Before people got bored collaborating with me, he was one of the brilliant ones who added so much to the music. I'm not collaborating these days, and although I'm enjoying making music, if I get a chance again to work with some good people, I'll jump at it. When collaboration works, it rocks.

Oh wow. That's pretty cool. I didn't imagine that this was a collaboration. Way to go Tjarko!

I noticed the thing where your voice lapses into normalcy here and there and I agree that's pretty cool.

Which guitar part is yours?

The boring 3/4 backing part.

BTW, that vocal's not dry. It's *present*. :D I experimented on this one and put both delay AND reverb on it. And a bagfull of parallel compression, of course.

Two things I love about your stuff- (1) Your arrangements sound really natural, almost effortless - kind of a "classic songwriting" vibe I get. The way they flow, it's like they just grew that way. (2) You kinda play fast and loose with your vocal deliveries... makes me jealous. Tracking vox is my least favorite part and I'm forever going over tiny parts and redoing 'em ad nauseum. I'm done when I get to the point where I can live with 'em, but I'm never really happy. I choke the life out of the performance trying to hit the notes. It's a little war I always lose. So then I hear one of your tunes and it sounds like you had a couple beers, did everything first take, had a total blast, and they came out perfect and I'm like "Why can't *I* track vocals like that?" and a heavy existential gloom falls upon me for a minute. Anyways, yeah the BGVs are a little quiet, but I'm finding the main vox to actually be a little loud on this one...even sitting on the mix in some places. That could be what you intended, but if I were to single out a nit I'd say pull em back just a little and then gauge the BGVs from there. Really cool tune as usual. Dig the Leslie effect on said BGVs.

Fair enough, I guess, but they sound good. Which is reassuring, actually, cuz I can do a part again and again until it's right too. It's not just you.

I'll redo this vocal. I like what I did on this one, but I can do it better. I'll cut the level. I've already brought up the bvs 4 dB. Thanks for the ideas and the encouragement. If it's worth your time and hm's time to comment, it's good.

Lol. Wtf? It's like a drunk Kermit the Frog singing :laughings:

I think the vocals are too crisp and present. They're way hot and on top. The rest of the mix is good I guess. The music break in the middle is really weird. Is that a sax I hear trying to pop out? Some sections of this song seem like they're being played backwards. The whole thing leaves me with an uneasy sort of confused feeling. I need something to cleanse my palate. :D

I thought this was generally decent. I thought the vocal was much dryer than the rest of the tracks. So the mix sounds a little dis-jointed in that respect.

I'm hearing a couple of vocal artifacts (clicks and pops). One instance is in the first line, on the word "stepped." Most of the others were early in the song.

Seemed like a minor timing error with the instruments right near the start.

And you did sound a bit like Kermit on this one.

Clean guitar sounded very nice. So did the bass.

edit - there was some sound you introduced in the middle break around 1:22. Not sure waht it was, and it was pretty far back in the mix. But at first it sounded like farting.

I couldn't get past the vocals.

It sounds all really well put together. The guitar tones are fantastic and sits all really nicely in with drums.

The Backups i would probably spread out a little more left and right.

The flugel horn could probably come up a bit in the mix.

The vocals are making me uneasy. I have to stop listening.

Yeah, it's a byproduct of the way I'm doing the parallel compression - it's emphasizing t's and suchlike. I've tweaked attack/release/threshold/level settings, but I'm finding it difficult to balance the benefits of the compression with avoiding the artifacts. Maybe it's the plugin I'm using. I'll try a different one. Compressor plugs are easy to find.

Yeah I guess I should learn to stop farting when I'm tracking.

:D I can call you Greggie and Greggie when you call me you can call me Kermie.

Okay, maybe I figured it out. It's a simple fix - just automate level cuts on the consonants that offend. Duh. In fact, you can work it like an effect. You can let various amounts of highlighted consonants sneak through for the saKe of an accenT on that parTicular consonanT.

Sounds cool, not sure the vocals aren't just a touch too much up front. Drums could definitely come up. cool, and FUN!!!

i say yes generally, but at times they sound ok level wise, other times very hard to hear.

Seriously, I have been meaning to get back to this song to tell you what I thought of it because I was a bit unsure when I first heard it. I'm so glad I did. :D It put a smile on my face. This is a very cool song, and the most unique one I've heard in ageeees. I love it. It's really funny, I love how you can sing like that. That is a hidden talent that I am sure goes mostly unnoticed in your regular life. IMO, this is original music at its best. :)

The backing has an effortless JJ Cale in the mid 70's feel to it.
I don't mind the alien vocals - bvs could lift a little.

Yes, my life is all about hidden talent. :D

Thanks for the ups. After I read responses to the funny voice version, I decided to redo the vocal. This time, I sang it with just a touch of funny voice. The downside of doing funny voices is that it stresses the voice more.
