I saw Puddle of Mud performing a cover of Brother the other day and I decided I could do a better job myself. I played all the instruments myself, including the double layered voices of Jerry and Layne (even the a capella bit..). I put it on MP3.com, so please listen and share your comments.

i'm not crazy about the guitar tone at the beginning.......the performance is very on though.......for alice in chains, the harmonies are key, and you did them very well........did puddle of mudd do the harmonies??

sounds pretty cool man

Yea the guitar sounds too direct.Nice performance and great choice for cover.Vox good.Mix decent.

great cover! definitely a great job..

main complaint is it sounds over compressed and a bit mid range- high endish.. and the solo is too loud..

really excellent cover.. probaby the best version I ever heard of this tune.. mint vocals!

man, how do you get away with posting covers on MP3.com? I did some old gospel tunes, and got my account suspended for old hymnals. (gimme a break:rolleyes: ) Plus, MP3.com never would resolve the issue, even though two other groups had the SAME song on their webpage...their interpretation.

Nice tune...not a big Alice in Chains fan enough to have bought one of their cd's, so I have no comparison, if that's really important or not.

Sounds good, but lacks raw energy, that I might suspect is on the original. Kinda like the stuff is "learned" and repeated, but not pumped out with the same emotion. A tough thing to do on a cover, for sure.

hey mix, he totally nailed it! This is closer to the original than any cover I have heard.. except the recording doesn't have the warmth of the original, and it's kinda harsh in spots.. definitely a great cover version though...

Thanks for listening and giving your opinions everybody.
I agree that the beginning guitartune isn't all that great. Alice in chains use an acoustic guitar there and I never quiet know how to get such a sound (I'm using a V-amp2). I did indeed use the compressor so maybe I'll try another effect. The solo might be too loud but not that much I think.
I know is doesn't quiet sound as warm as the original, but I guess that's not that unusual for a home-recording. Then again, it is hard trying to equal the energy of a AIC-song!
btw: no, Puddle of Mud didn't do the harmonies and it still wasn't key..
Thanks again!

Some very nice tones... the only AIC cd's I got are Jar of Flies & the self-titled one (three legged dog).... so haven't heard this song yet... till now :)

Very good vocals.... and didn't notice your accent... until the guitars cut out right before 4mins...

Great cover! I absolutely love the original and i believe you have done it justice my friend =). God...puddle of mudd covered this song? =\\ That can't be good.

although i'm going to have to agree with B.Sabbath on the lack of warmth/harshness, but that doesn't matter too much. The guitar solo isn't too loud at all..sounds around the same volume of the one on my AIC cd =)

Great performance Mr. Staley. Alice In Chains is one of the greatest bands ever.

yea im wondering that too. how do you put covers on mp3.com? i've seen other bands do it, but back when i signed up a few years ago, i know that wasn't allowed.

btw, i like this recording.

playing and vocals are really good...

guitars seemed too mono... i'd double them... if they're already doubled i'd take another listen and remix it...

FWIW... maybe consider washing the whole mix in with a small room reverb - with no reverb bottom and consider dropping the whole mix Hi-end (above 5K and before Reverb) down about 1 to 1.5 db. A bottomless Reverb will consolidate the hi end and smooth it some.

I enjoyed it though...

very good performance. the clarity is good in your mix, a little brite for me but consistent. Good tones of the guitars and bass. I like the drumming, very cool.

Mint man, AIC is my favorite band of all time, and Layne was the god damn man. I listened to Mad Season the other day, and I was expecting AIC, but it was definatly alot different.. kind of jazzy. But what ever... You up to collaborate and cover Would?

VERY WELL DONE. VERY FAITHFULL REPRODUCTION OF A COOL TUNE. I'D LOVE TO HEAR A REMAKE OF "WOULD" BUT I THINK IT WOULD BE A LUL TOUGHER TO DO THAN THIS ONE. ANYHOOO,
VERY NICE JOB.
