I'm thinking of buying one of the alesis multimix 16 channel usb mixers so i can record my bands rehearsals onto my computer. can anyone tell me if these are any good. i'm looking to record around 12 tracks simultaniously so will this be able to handle it or would the firewire version be more suitable?,

thanks

Don't waste money on the USB version. It only feeds a stereo track to the host.

If you want a mixer/soundcard combo with 16 discrete inputs/outputs to your computer, get the Multimix Firewire instead.

i'm not really buying it for the mixer abilities, more for the amount of inputs it provides and the cost, so do you think this is a good choice of interface?

No, if you want 12 tracks into your computer, get the firewire Multimix

my mistake. what i meant was if the firewire version would be a good choice. however, considering i don't need the alesis for it's mixing capabilities (and it would take up unnessacary space) can anyone recommend another make of interface which would provide the same number of xlr's & inputs for the same price. i've been looking on the market but haven't found an alternative yet.

I don't think there's anything else out there that can touch that Alesis for the price. The presonus firepod is a good unit for $500 but it's only 8 analog inputs

You will not find a 16 input soundcard for $350 anywhere...

The closest thing would be to buy 2 Delta 1010lt's form M-Audio, but that would still cost $400 and require 2 empty PCI slots in your computer.

Even at $600, the Multimix 16 Firewire is a good deal for a 16 input interface.

what about the hercules 18/12fw? i think i may be able to get away with using 12 inputs if i use my studiomaster desk for preamps. i've read a couple of reviews which are generally positive and i've seen a company selling it for £192 which is alot cheaper than what i would spend on the alesis. has anyone had any experience with one of these and are they any good?

Well, for one, they haven't updated their drivers in over a year and a half (since March 2005).

That either means the card is discontinued or their support just sucks. Sure doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling inside that I should give them my money...

i know this thread is a week or two old, but is there any difference between USB and firewire connectors on a computer? or will firewire stuff just plug into my pc's USB port?

Nope. Different kind of plugs, different kind of connection.
I'm seriously considering the FW 16-channel, both for live sound (mixing at my drum set to send to the house sound, since the guy mixing at a place a play a lot is REALLY bad), and recording.

What do you want to use it for? The usb wont let you record 12 tracks at the same time, UNLESS you want to record 12 tracks of the same thing. The usb mixers will take all inputs, mix them down into 1 stereo input, and that is what your going to get on your multitrack. If you want to record each channel of the mixer on its own track, you need to get the firewire model. No way around it :(
