S8-N used that in front of his GadgetLabs sound card and got some great results.

I'm using one too, but stopped tracking with it after getting tube preamps, which I prefer to the solidstate pres in the 12R. Right now I'm using it for monitoring playback only. The 12R's a pretty cheap way to get 8 channels going, although the EQ on each channel's just two knobs - high and low.

True, but most multitracks have some kind of eq built into them, I just want decent cheap mic pre's!

I found that the 12R is the most versitile small mixer. It has eight mic preamps with inserts on each of these channels. I bought one as a secondary mixer for keyboards, sound moduals, and extra audio inputs when needed. I recently bought a second 12R to go with my first one so that I can use my ADATs for mobile recording. I use the inserts on the 12R's0 channels to go in and out of the RCA connections on the ADATs.

NOTE: I would have bought the Studio 32 for my mobile recording, but I already had one 12R and it was cheaper just to buy a second.

I use one in the electronics rack for my edrum rig. For sound modules I use a Roland TD10xp and an Alesis DM5, and I use the 12R to mix these guys and also to split off a send to a little Lexicon reboing so that the two modules can appear to inhabit the same virtual space. Works like a champ.

I don't use the mic pres, so I can't address those, but the mixer itself is simple, rugged, compact, and functional as hell: low noise, excellent headroom. The whole edrum rig fits in a 5-slot portarack, with the TD10xp perched on top, and the long throw faders are very nice indeed for tweeking levels for live balance. I can just send a stereo pair to the PA, and we're in business.

I give mine two thumbs up in the "simple, minimalist" department.
