Alesis 3630

Youll get alot more for your $$$$ with a Behringer Autocom......

If you do a search you will see that for the most part, everyone will tell you that its a total piece of junk. I personally have never used one so I honestly can't say one way or the other. For that price you could easily pick up a Behringer Composer pro used (which gets a descent amount of praise around here). I own one and feel safe saying that its a usable comp/gate. Is it the best i own? not anywhere near it but for under 100 dollars it is highly usable. If you don't need the gates and are willing to shell out some extra cash you should pick up an FMR audio RNC, they go for just under $200 and would be a vast step over the behringer as well as the ALesis. Do a search, you will get more than enough opinions. Hell look at the title for the Alesis forum lol, it basically spells it out for you about the 3630.

I feel like I'm sitting in a group therapy session saying this, but I purchased a 3630 early on. I taped a quarter to it, that way if it came up missing I could say I lost something. :D The Behringer and RNC would be far better choices.

The Behringer Multicom is a great first buy compressor - 4 channels of compression for £70 is too good to pass up. Quality may not be fantastic, but its usable.

Hope thats helpful

my 1st compressors: dbx project1 and 3630. I cant wait to buy something better. besides, i have this reoccuring distortion/clipping through one channel of it when used for drums (snare or bass) that has almost ruined a few otherwise good takes. I just got them in a hurry for cheap to record drums for another band. Havent upgraded yet damnit.

Hey, what is the general consensus on the Alesis 3630 Compressor/Gate/Limiter. I've been offered one for relatively cheap ($65), but don't know anything about it.

If they were paying you $65 to take it I would consider it.

Heh,
I actually decided not to get it, since the Behringer Composer Pro can generally be found on ebay for about the same price.

Very Smart. Now just remember the words of wisdom you've
heard, that most people avoid 3630's, and move on. I will admit
to owning 2 of these beauties many years ago, and while an
experienced engineer/recordist can find ways to make a
3630 "work" if you will, the audio artifacts they can produce can
be a recording newbies (or anyone's) worst nightmare - it's best
to basically avoid them altogether, even as just a limiter.

But the real deal & steal in affordable compressors is the RNC.
I'd look into adding one in your future if you need more than one
comp. :)

I've found my 3630 to be quite useful.

I'm using it now to hold up one corner of my favorite old recliner ever since the back leg broke.

I have used it in the past as a gate with success.

Yup, horrible machine. Totally colors the sound. I put mine away in a box years ago, and haven't moved it since.

But I just read above it makes for a good gate. If I recall, it does not have balanced inputs and for that reason I'd never use it to record with. But it would work to hook it up in a bus for cleaning up already recorded sounds. I may try it just for that reason.

I used mine as a weapon when I robbed the liquor store across the street from my house!

I use to have one but...

my friend has one and I saw somewhere (maybe this site?) a link to a site that has instructions to mod the 3630. It had to do with putting burr browns in and other stuff. His sounds pretty decent, but still not as good as my rnc tho.

I bought 3630 for my "live" guitar rig. It became part of my "sound" with my guitar stuff.
While the general concensus is that its garbage, I had to use it yesterday and it saved the day. I spent alot of time with the vocalist trying different mics..positions..pre's etc... Nothing was working. I pulled out the 3630 and voila. Vocal tracks done. Singer said it was the first time in 10 years that he liked his vocals. He wanted to buy the signal chain from me. The MD421(U-5) is a loaner so I couldn't do it. I can't complain anymore...

It is made by Alesis and is as good or better than the HD24 or a whole slew of other Alesis products. I would have named it the Alesis Pro 3630 studio comp/gate/limiter/white noise generator.

oh yeah... the 3630 is definitely in the same class as the HD24...... Rogers Nichols has a 3630 on each input of the HD24 he uses and keeps raving about.........

WTF are you talking about???????????

ditto!!!!!

Acorec, please EXPLAIN that STATEMENT!!!

The truth is it doesnt matter what alesis product you buy they are all cheap and no where near pro gear.

All of alesis,s stuff is a cheap way to Record and always has been.
Not that thats a bad thing.
