As I am just starting to get into this, I have the most basic questions. I have asked at 2 Gateway stores about this and have gotten different answers. If I want to record my vinyl records onto cd, can the turntable be plugged into the sound card without amplification? IF not what do I need to get to do this?

Thank you all

Try the search engine, this has been answered many times.

Depending on the turntable it may or may not need some amplification. If it does there should be a way of sending it out 2 outputs of your receiver. You will need 1/8" stereo male to 2 RCA mono plugs whatever the case.

heheh.. great some of the links in there bring you to other posts telling the poster to search! Lots of info in most of the links though - the answer is in there.
