AKG's confusing model names

Anyway, is there a difference between their old 414b TL2 and the ULS? I'm trying to buy one from some guy and he says it's a TL2, but the pics of the mic have both TL2 & ULS markings on it. I need me a multi-pattern LDC and this mic has presented itself... I'm trying to do some research and am having a real hard time finding anything really useful, especially considering that they're A) discontinued and B) every dummy is making rap music these days and can't seem to speak on anything other than that they want "aggressive" or "growl" from their mics - many seem to be using SM57's or applying low-pass filters to their vox!! :eek::confused:

Any info y'all care to share about these two (or are they one) mics?
 
I believe that there is a difference yes,

The TL II's were built to house the same transducer capsule as the C12, and I think it shares some circuitry but not sure exactly how much.
Anyway, compared to the B-ULS it's got a small high frequency boost the same as the legendary C12.
How can it have both TL II and ULS markings on it? If it's where it should be, the marking can be found above the pattern selection switch, just beneath the grill. I'd be quite happy to have a look at the pictures for you to verify. PM me a link.

Just so you know, the replacement for the B-TL II is the XL II

I just checked out the XL II and with the additional pattern options, it seems like it could be better deal for the money than the TL II. I'm assuming that you might have had some experience with these mics... would you suggest that I just shell out and grab the XL II, rather than scooping up the TL? The snap-and-glue transducer idea kinda makes me feel a little ill.
 
The ULS designation is the transformer body. The C414B-ULS and TLII used the same one. The differences are in the capsules. Either mic works fine, but personally, I prefer the B-ULS or XLS to the TLII or XLII. The mic is bright enough without a high midrange boost that you can't turn off.-Richie
 
Thanks for the help, guys. One more thing: You think this mic is worth $700 used? There's a lot of good mics out there that I can get new for around this price, so I'm wondering if it's worth it. I'm going to go check the mic out this evening.
 
I purchased a new stereo pair ... worth every penny!
