AKG240 headphones/repair?

I fired up my pair of AKG240 cans last night...and to my surprise the right speaker was not working at all....
I'm not sure what happened - the cans haven't been jolted/jostled or mishandled in any way.

I purchase these cans in March 2001 - so they are no longer covered under the 1 year warranty.

Should I send them back to AKG and hope that the repair bill is reasonable?? They have a policy of charging a $25 'repair bench' fee if you get the repair quote and decide to not go with it....

I'm kind of at a loss here...is it worth it or should I buy another pair?

also - can someone suggest some good phones (other than AKGs - 'cause I'm not purchasing anything else form them) in the $100 range?

I've repaired them myself. Everytime I've lost audio on one side, it's been a simple reconnecting of the wires inside the ear-piece. Open them up and take a look, you could save yourself a lot of time and money.

hi there, left side out of order. with some pressing and shifting
the sound reappears occasionally.
these are 141 studios. how do i open em up ? don't want to break somethin ...
any help really appreciated cause i need those cans 24/7 :P

i know that on the 240's you have to pry up the metal label, and the screw is underneath. not sure about the 141's though.
