AKG Perception 820 tube microphone

Has anyone purchased this microphone or gotten to try this microphone out yet? Any news at all (besides what I can read from their marketing department) for I'm on a research mission before I get to serious about adding this one to my microphone locker.
 
I'm kinda curious too! I don't wanna spend the money to try it out (even though I've got it), plus I can usually make anything better than AKG has to offer these days, so why try? But, if this has possibilities to improve I'd like to have a look to figure it out.
 
Just knowing the line its in would suggest cut corners and inferior capsules...and a short list of why they were able to make this so cheap...same goes for the AT20 series...the Shure PGs, and those chinese lines designed to make this as a hobby more accessable to the Joe Punchclocks of the world...

I would be hard pressed to recommend buying anything where making it as cheap as possible was the intention of the company...especially when good stuff is out there selling for arround the same used.
 
Yes make a hot rod Frankenstein microphone.
What were those opening lines to the six million dollar man? and what would he cost now due to inflation?

Well maybe someone out there will produce the knowledge that we seek.

Well that is for starters of course...IMHO the AT4060 is the bare minimum acceptable tube mic...new its $999...there must be more worldwide for sale used.
If I was to feel the need to have a tube mic in my possession It would be my best option...or anyone else that is picky about what goes into their locker.

They have just released the bare minimum options for ribbon mics too...in the AT4080/AT4081...both should demand due consideration arround here.

Who really wants to skimp on their tools?
 
I think the Rode NTK and the K2 are better mics than Darrin thinks they are, and that goes for Studio Projects T3. Those are what I would define as the minimum tube mic. The AT4060 is an excellent mic, and would be a worthy addition to any mic cabinet. The best tube mic I've used personally is a Lawson L47 MkII, which is a pretty faithful knock off of a U47. I've never used the Soundelux version, but tracking engineers I trust are impressed by it. And yes, I'd love to own a Brauner valvet, but I like being married too much. I'd love to try out the Perception, but the jury is still out on that one. I try not to judge mics I have not heard because of the other mics in the series, especially with AKG's. Speaking of AKG tube mics, the solidtube is an underated mic, largely because the stupid foam wind screen in it tends to muffle highs. Once that is ripped out, you get a mic that is very similar to an AT4060, and I don't doubt that a tube switch would help also. The question is- why would I buy an AKG tube mic made in China, when for about the same price, I could buy an AKG tube mic made in Austria?-Richie
 
Ive used the solid tube...wasnt that impressed...but doing that mod on it wasnt an option...it was rented.

But solid tube wasnt in the "cheap" line either...it was a full line AKG...I think they made it sound like that so the C12 would still be a sought after mic...Im sure they wouldnt want anything sold for sub $1000 to be even near as good as the C12...AT doesnt have that same problem...Im not sure why Shure doesnt even want to compete with a tube of thier own...but it might be in thier future plans...they have already added 2 ribbons.

As for rode mics and the T3...im sure they are the finest that can be offered by chinese or offbrands, but the rode I had wasnt a good mic...the Studio Projects I had was good.
 
AKG Perception 820 capsule

I do know for a fact the 820 has the same capsule assembly as the 420. If this helps anyone
 
AKG tout it as the "Flagship" of their Perception line.
I gave it a lot of thought before buying the Solid Tube which to my ear was built just for me. (no mods required)
I liked the Perception sound when I bought one but by the time I had produced one full album with it, I could pick out that high mid range a mile away.
I think what steered me away from the Perception 820 though, was when AKG and someone around here described their Perception line as being "Entry level".
I was looking to move up from that level but in all honesty, what AKG calls Entry Level is well beyond what some manufacturers produce as their top line.
