if u were going to get a pair of 414s, would you find a "matched" pair (or just buy 2 new at the same time with similar serials) or will any 2 of the same model be close enough?
For rock I'd say the differences will be small enough that it won't make a difference. If it's not much more, though, you may want a matched pair just in case you wanted to record something a little more critical.
Like supercreep says, it depends on what you want to do. If you are going to use them as a coincedent pair on a string quartet, a matched pair would be good. If you are using them for drum overheads, any 2 will do.-Richie

Unless you're doing classical music or something similar you will probably be ok to match them by ear or two get two consecutive serial numbers. The AKG stereo kit is very nice though.
well maybe you guys can suggest a decent set of overheads based on the mp3s I posted in the mixing clinic. I wish there was a way to audition the difference between say these mics and sm81s. There isn't a store in town that carries either, and when I go into the city to the big stores they usually dont carry them either and probably wont let me audition them anyway. at least not in their drum room.
