I bought the above unit with some other stuff!! Its still in the box coz I have NO idea how to use it!!

Can anyone explain the concept of a sampler!! The above in particular!!

I know its a horribly stupid question but the manual does not explain diddly shit!!

Thanks

A proper sampler like the one you've got is a synthesizer without any sounds on it. You have to load the sounds yourself, i.e., sample them. You can do this digitally using a CD-ROM drive and sample CDs (very expensive, usually), or you can sample analogue style using audio CDs or just a mic. plugged into the sampler to record anything you like. Once you've sampled your sounds you can warp them in all sorts of ways using the onboard filters. You can do things like sample yourself blowing over the top of a beer bottle, filter and layer the sound to make it sound like a ghostly Hammond organ (apparently). You can plug a midi keyboard ino the sampler and play it like a synth. Or you can connect it up to a sequencer. I use mine mainly for drums. Sampling can be fiddly and tricky to do, but you can get some interesting sounds and the sound quality on Akais is very good. You have to read the manual, though. You can't get round it. Sampling's too complicated to explain over the Web. Then ask specific questions on boards like this when you get stuck and hope someone will know the answer.
