is anyone here familiar with the Akai DPS16 mixing/multitracker console? Specifically how is the effects unit and also how about the pre's quality? Just a few questions to give me a gauge of what I can expect for my money spent...

hey man!~!!! I am a HAPPY AKAI DPS 16 user and owner!@@!! have had mine for about 9 months now but a friend bought one about 3 years ago and another friend bought one a year after that. So, i have been messing around with them for about 3 years now and have one of my own. Just finished up recording a 4 song demo on it with basically the machine and a condensor mic.(AT 3035) The sound is AMAZING. I have mixed down and burned a copy to CD=R and it truly is professional sounding. The music is all acoustic, uptempo with some hand drums and shit. So, I did not use the eq or effects that much this time because we got such a good sound just from the mic and placement. But, the reverbs are pretty good but some effects arent that great, like the compression and that type of stuff. Cant really hear a difference. the editing features are GREAT. very easy to use. anyway, just thought I'd let ya know! peace the dude

I'm not damiliar with the Akai you have but I have an ancient Akai reel to reel (4 tracks with a crossfield) that still works great after at leact 15 years, so as far as I'm concerned the quality and duribility are definately high on the ratings scale.
