If you get the pads you'll want the keys. If you get the keys you'll want some knobs. Knods to the faders. So on and so on...... Playing drums is real lovely on the pads but for playing notes you'll need those keys. If you can afford it having both pads and keys hooked up and operational is nice. Be sure you are gonna use both. Don't waste the cash on something you'll leave sitting around. I got faders, knobs, pads, keys, a joystick, some more pads, a foot pedal, and some more pads. I really only use the keys and the last set of pads. Nothing beats the pads on the MPC for drums and for triggering samples. Try playing a chord on some pads though. The Akai pads and a USB keyboard sound like all you'd need in a computer setup. I'd go for the keys first cuz they do what the pads do and more. Then get pads if you want to get into your drums or samples.
