Akai GX

Steven L Bender's Akai pages are also a good resource of info etc. I'm pretty sure that the GX heads are no longer available, so its probably a matter of tracking down a dead machine and pulling the heads from that.

Do you definately have a faulty head? Those things are basically indestructible!

The GX heads don't wear like regular heads but many do get age related problems and they many times open up, crack and basically self destruct from the inside, I guess from the extreme pressure they've been under for years. I've worked on a couple of Akai decks and all had head problems. No wear, even with many hundreds of hrs on 'em, but other problems. They still can sound great despite ....

They appear to be rusty inside, certainly not very healthy looking!

Yeah, that's PRECISELY what they look like. Is that really "rust" inside or ....... ??

It's difficult to tell without removing the head from the block and peering up close, but it didn't look like that from new, I'm sure. And it doesn't appear to have been re-aligned since 1973 as the adjustment screws still have their dobs of seal intact (!!). The surface looks fine, just the internals...
