Does anyone out there have any experience with connecting a AKAI DPS16 to a Mackie 16 channel mixer?

If you want to use the Mackie pres go out the inserts into the inputs of the dps16. If you havent got the mixer yet, get a soundcraft M-series for this. the pres are 100% better.

Does the DPS16 have 16 inputs? If I get a chance I'll check this out. Who makes soundcraft M series? I thought Mackie was a superior mixer?

Soundcraft makes Soundcraft. I wouldn't say the Soundcraft pre's are 100% better than the Mackies but they are better. The M series have the same pre's that are in the Ghost, which is a damn fine mixer.
