Hi there! This is my fist message, I'm glad to be here and I hope I'll learn a lot from you guys!

Let's see, i have some issues with my home studio. Nowadays I'm working with a Rhode NT2 and a M-Audio Fast Track Duo as an Audio Interface, I just switch my mic to my M-Audio (xlr) and then pass the sound by USB to my laptop but:

I can't record at 44Khz 24 bits, I just can get 44Khz 16bits, at least it is what Fast Track Duo soft and DAW says, but i can see in the specs that the M-Audio can record 48Khz and 24 bits so i don't know where the problem is.

I think that's about USB conexion, maybe it should be conected by FireWire or SPIDF? I don't know how important is this. Maybe it's related with my AI PCI's laptop (i think it's not a good one)?

Some people just told me that i should buy a better AI like a Focusrite or Roldand, but i want to make sure if i can do what i want with my Fast Track Duo before buying a new AI.

Hope you can help me!

My mac with adobe audition often refuses to accept certain combinations are valid - so it seems happy with 44.1/24 but occasionally just says no to 48/24.No idea why - sorry. Audacity which I don't use for multitrack, does accept the same interface - so never got to the bottom of it!

Thank you for your fast answer Rob. I was working with Audacity for simple recording but nowadays I'm using Ableton Live 9. But it doesn't metter, is the same thing.

By the way, i'm using an Asus laptop with windows 7 under ASIO (don't know if this is important).

If the M Audio specs say 48/24 then you should be able to record using that. If you can't, the problem won't be the interface itself, nor its USB connection. Most likely it will relate to drivers or maybe how your DAW is set up.

Having said that, not being able to record 48/24 and being limited to 44.1/24 is no great handicap. Video uses 48, but you don't need it for plain audio. Any notional gains in quality by going from 44.1 to 48 are likely to be swamped by other influences (e.g. bad room acoustics, noisy recording environment and so on).

I think this must be my problem, driver issues... I will check and tell you about it.

Yes but i'm not able to record in 44.1Khz / 24 bits. Nowadays i'm recording at 44.1Khz 16 bits. I just want to increase my bits recording up to 24. I accept that 24 bits are better sound quality (or range) than 16 bits, that's the point. Anyway I will try to change my driver config and will see how does this work. Thank you mate!

Ok . . . somehow my brain missed that. I would be unhappy if I could only record at 16 these days . . . though I did so for years.

That makes it sound more like drivers

It is sometimes tricky to switch bit depths in some DAW software.
I suggest a download of Audacity where the "Edit>Preferences" menu makes sample rate and bit depth obvious and easy to set.

If Audacity does not work then a re install of drivers might but I hold out little hope of success.

What do Avid say? (hah! ok, yes. Joke!).

Dave.

Check the Sound settings in the windows control panel. That's where the driver settings usually reside. If you're using ASIO, then there's a third party [maudio] driver app loaded and probably appears at the lower right of your screen. That would be the other place to change the resolution at the driver level.

If you're tired/frustrated already, unplug the USB interface, uninstall all the maudio software, reboot and reinstall the software, then plugin the interface again. Sometimes drivers don't get loaded properly the first time and/or when the usb device is already connected to the computer.
