Do many people, like myself, suffer from the paralysis of analysis?

I run scads of searches on this board. If anyone utters something negative about a product I am considering, I rule it out - even if the reviewer has only been recording for three weeks and hasn't figured out how to work his Fostex 4 track cassette recorder yet. I am no Harvey Gerst, by a long shot, but I have been recording on semi-decent gear for 20 years...

So I bought a stinking Brick on Ebay. I have agonized over it so much that the hapless piece of equipment can't possibly fulfill my expectations.

Are you saying that they sound as bad as they look?

I just bought it. It will take several days to get here, I guess.

It is butt ugly in the pictures.

Hahaha - are you referring to that misdirected review that I gave over the weekend? When you get the Brick hook it up, make sure your input is set at +4 (rather than -10) and agonize over how good that little box sounds. It really is good!

No offense meant. I didn't mean to seem specific. You are clearly an experienced home recording dude. I was making fun of my own timidity.

Sooner or later you just have to roll the dice...

Whenever considering gear I frequently do the same kinds of message boards searches. Sooner or later you'll find at least one person that absolutely hates whatever it is that you are thinking of buying. Doesn't matter what it is, it's guaranteed that *someone* will hate it.

That doesn't mean it is a bad peice of gear (although maybe it does), but it usually just means that the gear didn't suit their purpose for using it, or the style of music they do. So if you factor in the element of the type of work they do, you you can get a better idea of whether it might work for you.

Also, if there are consistent complaints about the gear from a variety of sources, then that is reason to take note.

But I don't think I ever seen a single piece of gear that everybody liked.

mandocaster---I've got four items on ebay right now and with the money they bring planned on buying a brick and maybe something else ---- every night this week I have decided "OK good --- then I will go with the brick" then read a post or two and think --- "well maybe my money would be better spent on something else --- or -- crap I'll just save it."

So yes I do suffer from Paralysis through analysis BIG TIME!!! ---

The bad thing is I suffer from Option axiety every time I try to finish a mix!!!

But it's good to know there are other sick folks like me!!!

Triangulate!

Assuming that you are comparing three equal products...I go to Harmony Central Review first...and look for most favorable unbiased reviews...then I do a search here at OUR site for anyone's opinion...finally the name brand and it's ability to
maintain some type of value if it doesn't work out and I have to sell it. I'm just trying to reduce to odds of a bad choice. But I've been burned before and I'm sure it will happen again. Just not so often.

Right up there with the paralysis of analysis is the preoccupation with inconsequential increments
