Hi guys,

I'm new to this site, and I need you guy's advice on a thing or two.
I'm looking to self-record a set of original songs, and I am a vocals/acoustic guitar/piano guy.. I cannot spend more than around $100 for a microphone..and that's where I have just become clueless, as there are a lot of choices.
I am looking for an airy vocal sound, and that's the main thing I want to achieve out of the microphone.
What I have been looking at are just a bunch of MXL's, pretty much:
990/991
770
V67G or V67i
R144 (ribbon mic, not sure if I need a good preamp to make this sound good)
550/551R
And I also have achieved some good results with a Studio Projects B1 condenser.
Also, I have the option to buy a set of AT 2020/2021's for $100.

So if anyone has any opinions for me, that would be hugely appreciated.
Thank you

Audio Technica AT 2020 gets good reviews and you could get 2 for your budget. Behringer C1 is a nice mic, again 2 for your money. GLS ES 57 or 58, 3 for your dosh. Electro Voice Cobalt, I got 2 for 70 bones. Check out Amazon and Musicians Friend, you'll find tons of options.

imo.. the A-T's are one of the better lines for trusting the lower products... high quality controll etc...

AT-2020 is a dependable condenser and I like the Blue Snowball with it's 3 position switch (cardioid, cardioid with -10dB pad and omni).

viva,

As you can see from the excellent suggestions in this thread finding affordable mics that can make good recordings is not a problem. For recording acoustic piano and guitar I can recommend the Naiant omnis. Excellent condenser mics that are inexpensive brand new.

What are you recording into? I assume since you have been using a B1 you have phantom power. The condenser mics require phantom power.

AKG makes some really nice dynamic vocals mics in your range if you can buy used. For vintage I can recommend the D120E, the D310, and the D321. Also in this family and very well thought of are the D320 and D330. Not quite so vintage are the D690 and the D770. Also in this family are the D790 and the D880 but I haven't tried these myself.

Very inexpensive yet wonderful dynamic omnis are the Radio Shack 1070b, c, or d mics made by Shure they are EV RE50 clones with extended frequency response and great for acoustic guitar or vocals. You can get a pair as cheap as $30 used.

There is much more discussion of inexpensive microphones in my fifty dollar mic thread.

Thanks,

Hairy Larry
