AES/EBU...XLRs, and TRS patchbays

Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I wasn't sure where else it would go...

So here's the problem. I've got a MOTU 896 with a single AES/EBU xlr input. I've got 3 devices with AES/EBU XLR output. Instead of reaching around back to switch all the inputs all the time, I wanted to bring them up front.

So here's my idea for a solution: Using XLR-balanced TRS cables into my patchbay, and routing them through the patchbay using balanced TRS patch cables. Anyone know if this solution will work, or have a better suggestion?

Thanks!

AES/EBU connections are DIGITAL signals, you won't be able to route them to a typical analog patchbay. You could potentially use a patchbay for video signals, but they run over a grand... The only AES/EBU digital routing boxes I know of are by Z*Sys, but again, you're looking at at least a grand, if not more...

I figured that would be the case, but check this out...

I soldered some xlr connectors to 3 RCA phono plugs that I plugged into a regular video switcher, and the signal came through just fine. No noise or data corruption or anything.

I think I'm going to try it anyway and see what happens.
