I currently have been recording on a 488mkII for about 6 months now and am seriously thinking about buying a good 8 to 12 track digital recorder. I know this is the place where all the people who know whats what come and chat, so please post as many replies as you want, I am open to any and all suggestion. I am willing to spend up to 600 or so. thanks in advance.

Before you plunge into the murky waters of the Digital Lagoon take a look at these

TSR8

388

38-8

Akai 1212

All within or near to your limit.

The Akai does require a somewhat proprietorial brand of tape, but I do believe there is someone still making them. Though I can't recall who off hand.

For the ones without mixers you could either use your 488 or save up a little more and get one of those el cheapo Yamaha desks, like the MG 16/4.

Yo Lonely One:

Do the research on digital models. Tape? Well, that was nice. i used two 488's and loved them; but, when I record tracks now and just push a button and ZIP I'm back to start, ready for another track, well it beats the heck out of tape.

I use the Yam 2816 -- takes a while to get the drift of the manual, as per all manuals today.

There are many other models of digital stuff out there but you will have to pay a bit more if you want GOOD sound reproduction and headroom. I began with an old tape 4 tracker and worked my way up to digital. All fun and learning was great, with the help of this site and others.

So, like, look at Fostex, Korg, Akai, and Yamaha and see what might fit into your budget.

A SIAB is nice because you get to burn the CD with the same box.
