I had posted an ad on my local craigslist stating that i would like to buy a 4 track that you could record 4 channels at the same time on. Someone responded saying that they would sell me a tascam 246 for 75 dollars. Heres the catch -

"right now, the belt is worn out, which you could
probably replace with just a new piece of rubber, TRK
2 doesn't record, and two of the main control
buttons(REC & STOP)are kind of floating around and
hard to press. I brought it in to an electronics
repair place and they said it would
cost about $150 to repair it."

Is this more trouble than its worth?

WAAAAY more trouble. Go for a reel to reel in decent shape like a TASCAM 3440, 40-4 and you will be much happier. 10" inch reel machines will sound much better when you have to bounce tracks.
