Hello to you!

This is my first post and i would like some advice on my setup.

I'm using a p2 333mhz with a soundblaster 64 pci soundcard. For recordings i use cooledit with a staggline dynamic mic through a cheap 2 channel dj mixer. I record guitar and vocals. Reason is my main sound resource. Wavelab/ cooledit are my mastering tools.

What could i do to upgrade this setup, and improve the sound quality of the vocals and guitar. At the moment i have virtually no budget, hopefully that will change soon.

Thanks!

I think that we have all started in that same area. My advice is to first up-grade the sound card. A lot of these guys do not care for the Soundblaster, but I have had great results with the Soundblaster Live. I see that the Audigity2 is getting cheap now. I recommend getting the one with the live drive as well. It rocks. After that I would go for the better mixer followed by a large diaphram condincer mic.

With no budget it makes things a little tough....

1st i would buy a SM58 mic

2nd a mixer with decent preamps, e.g mackie, soundcraft...

3rd probably a better soundcard maybee a delta or something??

Others would place them in different priority but a microphone can make a HUGE diff, i'm not familiar with the one you mentioned but if its a cheapie then thats what you get back.

DJ mixers are fine for mixing decks but i cant imagine the mic preamp being real nice.

The soundblaster should be fine for recording single/stereo tracks to but thats about if you want multi tracks simultaneous then you will need to upgrade.

Hope this helps

I would also go for a new soundcard......but would not recommend a sound blaster. Try an Audiophile 2496, or a Delta 44 if your budget allows. Mocharock is correct as well by suggesting you need a new mic. There's many LD condensers for under $100. If you get a condenser, you'll need a pre-amp, which provides the microphone with power so it can operate.

Try looking through the NEWBIE forum....this kinda question gets answered all the time.

Mixit-G's response appeared as I was writing mine....but all are good suggestions. You've got the software, and if you PC can handle it, you're at the point where you can go wherever you want

Good Luck!

I agree with most of what has been said and second the Mic pre and a good condencer mic.
