I am a relative novice with regards to home recording. I have been doing some form of it for quite some time, but I have gotten out of it and now the technology almost seems like a strange new land where very little makes sense. I am familiar with older MIDI sequencers (computer based) tied to MIDI keyboards that are then plugged into some kind of amplification (usually a small P.A. system).

I want to put together a new system that takes adavantage of more modern configurations and instrument patches. This would include the software and hardware, instruments or sounds and the approach that is used to put compositions into these systems.

I realize this is a loaded very open ended request. But it has been a very long time since I have done this and I have a feeling I will be unlearning a great deal before I can even begin to fathom how i can efficiently construct new material in the new world.

And help, guidance, direction, links etc. would be greatly appreciated!

The places you really need to go are here and here. Even if no one answers immediately, there's bound to be some worthwhile stuff to read there.
Hope that helps.

Dave, midi really hasn't changed any in the past decade.

Everything you did before is pretty much the same as it was....
