I'm seeking advice on a new setup for my home project studio. Here's what I've got to work with.
Room - 12' x 18', with one wall extendable by 2 1/2' along one vertical 8' section on the inside of the house.
Floor is concrete.
Walls are old thick brick from the 40's, covered with a layer of mortar. Windows aren't a problem, as the family business is windows (can get some high-STC rated windows and custom build them.) The inside walls, however, are typical walls - sheetrock / drywall & wood studs. Ceiling is 8' tall, typical with sheetrock / drywall.
I know I don't have a lot of space to work with, but I'd like to have a vocal closet initiated somewhere. If I split the room in 3rds, I could have a 12' x 12' live room and 6' x 12' control room area to work with. Any suggestions on that?
My studio setup will be run with Mac G5 w/ Pro Tools 002, and Event active studio 6 or 8 monitors (haven't decided yet - don't want to over-kill). I want to keep it simple and functional.
So my main questions are related to getting a vocal closet fit in there somewhere. How small can a vocal closet be with an 8ft celing? Also, would you leave the concrete floor and throw a big rug over it, or lay down wood or pergo?
Because the walls are so old, I'm going to sheetrock / drywall over the existing brick & mortar walls for cosmetics, which should help to cut down on sound even more. I'm just trying to keep things quite, as the nearest neighbor is just 30 yards away, without compromising sound quality. Any suggestions?
