Hee is the latest info I have gotten
The MPX 500 is discontinued as far as I have been told. There will be no more new ones and the last floor models and such were being blown out for $399.00 as Sam Ash here in NYC. The MPX1 has come down in proice and a new one is now about $650.00. Actually, I only heard that they once cost more but are cheaper now. I am not sure of this fact. Nevertheless, I had an MPX 200 that never worked properly and so I finally brought it back and was going to get an MPX 500. After placing my order, I was told about the discontinuation of that model. Assuming that it is true, I have had to reconsider my purchase. I have therefore decided that since I ultimately am interested in mostly reverbs and will want the best I can afford, I have looked into
the PCM 91 and 81. That being said, the MPX 1 has been strongly recommended becuase it allegedly contains some of the better Lexicon reverb sounds. I am now wondering if the extra money spent on either a 91 or 81 is worth it. I can get multiple reverbs, for instance an MPX 1 and
a TC M-One for less than a PCM 91 or 81 and still have money left over for say a new pre amp, or compressor, or whatever.
I am quite undecided but as I see it, if I were to buy
a PCM 81 or 91 three things would occur. I would be getting, of course, "industry standard" reverbs and/or effects (that is, I know I will get some F#$@%$# good reverbs and effects), the items will retain theri value better and, should I want to offer my studio for commercial rentals at some point, having the "industry standard" gear seems to be one of the strong seeling points for many studios.
Much to consider besides merely budget becuas I have also realized that the old expression of "buy cheap, buy twice" seems to come especially true in the studio equipment game.
