advice on laying down artificial drum tracks needed...

I sing and play guitar but unfortunately dont have a drum kit. I have looked into and use several different drum programs but they just dont have anywhere close to the feel of a real drummer. (I currently use fruity loops and hotstepper)

Is there a program out there that will let you drum live instead of laying down a ton of steps sequentially? Im thinking something like keyboard drumming but without the keyboard. If its crazy just let me know, but I would think that there is SOMETHING out there that will let me do it with my regular computer keyboard or something. thank you guys for your time.

before I got a MIDI controller keyboard I had a program that allowed the computer keyboard act as a MIDI keyboard. I used it to mess around and learn how to set up soft synths. That was over a year ago so I can't really remember what the name was. Try 'Software MIDI Keyboard Lite' it might be the same type of deal.

And for realistic-sounding drums I use the Addictive Drums VSTi and never had to use anything else, its HIGHLY customizable and sounds so good.

what works for me

Hi - I feel your pain - it can be a boring task with barely adequate results. The best thing I've found for drums is to get a CD of drum samples, and use looping software such as Acid Pro to create the tracks. You can probably find freeware looping software and also sites with freeware drum samples, although I can't really recommend anything specific. I really like Drums on Demand drum loops, you can create very realistic drum tracks. Any actual sequencing software with built-in sounds that I've ever used didn't give me as good results, but maybe I never took the time to learn them.

Acid Studio(The cheap one), Is a good option as you can lay out tracks on a grid as well and put beats together and copy and paste as needed. I use Reason now for all my drum programming. And it works well for me.
