So I am a total noob when it comes to press. My band is trying to get on some blogs. Preferably New York based ones since that is where we gig. I don't even know where to start when it comes to press. I personally rarely read music blogs so that may be part of the issue. How do you find blogs? What do you even put in an email about your music? Any feedback would be helpful.
Thanks,
Josh

Aside from having a direct in, its all about networking. Have your friends ask different podcasters, bloggers, etc. about your band, if they get enough traffic they'll take notice.

Blogs are usually run by individuals. I would just ask the author of the blogs, and if the person likes your stuff, great!

get music on blogs 1

1. get a blog list or.. hunt down each individually by googling "music blogs city name"
2. read contact/about pages of those blogs that are in your genre
3. collect their emails and save into as email contacts
3. create a press release(email that contains your band's music link, coverart, bio)
4. email press release to each individual blog or "BCC" to all simultaneously
5. followup in a week to see if they posted :spank:

4. email press release to each individual blog or "BCC" to all simultaneously

Careful with that stuff. Savvy users know when you BCC them a form letter, and it annoys them. Getting added to someone's spam list is not a good first impression.

Seconded. You'd be better served by handpicking a blog you read regularly and feel caters to the type of music you like. Then send a personalized email, first identifying yourself as a regular reader and talking a little about what you like about that blog and why you feel your music's a good fit.

It is up to how you want to send em out. There's no right or wrong way.

I find that while mass email blasts are frowned upon, if the music is quality, coverart is easy on the eyes, and the email is formatted smoothly, then majority of the blogs will indeed post it.

The % who didn't post will be followed up with a more personalized submission.

Send them money to advertise your stuff.....that always works. :)

Agree with flat_feet, you should start by picking a few blogs that you feel are a good match for your band. Most blogs have twitter and fb pages. The best way to start is to go slow and easy and connect with them (from your band account) on Twitter and FB. Chime in (retweet, like) where relevant, and after they start to recognize you a bit that's the best time to ask about doing a "guest post" or being featured.
