If you tried it and you like it, then obviously it's ok. But, if you are buying without hearing, I'd keep looking. Basswood is a fine filler material, but it's not resonant at all. It's also not a very bendable wood as a veneer and could easily go out of round over time. It's what they make venitian blinds out of. If you can, hold out for the sonor maple/basswood laminate. It will have a much more musical sound. In my opinion philippine mahogany (luan), which is in the same price range, is way more resonant than basswood.

Thank you for the intresting info, I`ll defenitly take this into consideration.
I still havent gotten anything.
Will do a test as I have both kinds to try. :)

Well, if you are removing the bottom heads they are going to sound like a steaming pile of ass so I'd find a dirt cheap sub-entry level kit and save my money :)

I just talked to my drummer coworker today.
Being that I like a dead drumsound "like early genesis, king crimson, yes camel" drums with less resonance would be in my best intrest.

I mean when the bottom heads are removed and the top heads are muffled there`s not much resonance left, Right? :o .

I know most people hate this sound, but for me its gold worth the dryer the better.
I once heard a recording by the Strawbs, and I was told they laid wet towles over the over the heads and totaly dampened the sound its the best drum sound I`ve heard. :)

I`m thanking everyone for theire input, I really apreciate it. :)

I have a Mapex M and almost everyone that plays it cant believe how good it sounds. I like the fusion kit for recording.

Any of the lower end kits will be fine.
I think the sound of the kit is 65% tuning 25% heads 10% shells....That's just me.

TimboZ, you forgot to include the shell edges! (I guess that's included in your 10% shells...)

Out of round=nearly no good tuning. That's why cheapo - especially used cheapo - kits are not always a good choice for longer term use.

But it is all about tuning. I always say that at least half of a drummer's ability to sound good is in their tuning skills. The rest is in knowing how to play.
