Currently, I am not using any software program to mix the tracks recorded with the Fostex. I try to bounce and mix everything using that little red machine.

As a general rule of thumb, do you add effects, mastering and etc...when you bounce the tracks to 5/6? Or, do you bounce the tracks "dry"?

I have noticed that if I bounce the tracks "wet" and then bounce additional tracks onto the bounced track, the result is not that great. In fact, it sounds a bit distorted-- almost as if it's clipping, but the level indicator shows that it's way below the 0 dbl. So, I'm not quite sure what it is. Perhaps bouncing has caused the guality of the sound to deteriorate? Is that possible given it's a digital recorder?

Is there a rule of thumb to bouncing tracks?

Thanks in advance.

Btw, sorry about posting it to the previous thread. I press the wrong button.

Knopfler fan,
I haven't noticed that exact problem, just similar. I think it's more my inability to master. I've noticed that once you have tracks 1-4 bounced to 5/6, it's pretty much a done deal as there's no separation of the tracks. That is where the computer comes in. Ultimately, with the computer you have nearly unlimited tracking. Something I've yet to try. I do however record dry and add fx on the bounce. Again.....once it's done and you erase 1-4.....there's no going back. I'll eventually get it right, it's just gonna take some time.

If I bounce, I record all my levels low around 12. When I bounce to 5 and 6 I try to keep a similar level. It is only when I bounce to 7 and 8 that I add the mastering effects to the whole mix.
