So my band recorded this in a studio a few months ago with a very reputable but are now just finding the time to get it mixed and mastered. I thought I'd see if anything could recommended before we do it with regards to the song itself, mixing ideas or things of note etc. There's a few obvious things like the snare in the third verse but all comments are welcome including those about the song itself if you're willing to give them!

Quite good stuff here...The guitars sound like they have been recorded well. Just really dirty it up a little add some growl to the bass for instance, but it's pretty much getting there - the vocals sound great.

Good luck

Sounds brilliant man. You said this hasnt been mixed properly?!?
Yeah the snare has a bit of a ring to it, no much you can do about that unless you use snare replacement or record the drums again.
Who recorded and mixed this? Where did you record /mix this?

Nice!!! Sounds very good, and well mixed. Nice song to boot!!! Cool.

Let me clarify, it's had a rough mix but we're employing someone else to get it finished. The plan is to get to radio standard so things like the snare replacement will have to happen. The guy that did it is a New Zealander by the name of Dave Rhodes, he was responsible for mixing the debut album of nu-metal band Blindspott who were huge both in that country and Asia. So I guess I'm just looking for the more fiddly things we can do to it up to standard.

The guitars do sound really nice. Real chunky but not too overpowering in the mix.
The guitars now is the thing that is holding me back from making professional standard mixes. Could you please let me in on some of the things that were done at the recording process.
What guitar/distortion/amp did you use?
Did you record a clean track and lay it under the distorted track?
Did you layer the distorted guitars?
What mics did you use?

Sorry about all the questions but recording distorted guitars is holding me back something awfull. Any answers to these questions would be brilliant.

I'm really impressed with the comments on the guitars! I'm actually having trouble remembering how we did, and as I didn't engineer it my knowledge is a bit sketchy. I know we used a Mesa 2 x 12 cab, close miked (only, no room mics), with a marshall JCM800 (or 900?) head. All distortion was from the amp. I believe eqing on the amp was pretty basic ie High 7, Mid, 5, Bass, 10. The clean guitars were recorded from a Fender Jazz Chorus. As for the actual mixing, I'm not sure what went into getting it to the standard its at. Oh and mics, i think it was just an SM57.

I can't really add to what everyone else said. The snare really needs more crack and maybe the distortion on the guitars tightened up a bit more. But in the meantime, I'd buy a copy!

one thing you could add...

Cheers strat man. I think i have come to the conclusion that i just dont spend enough time on getting the sound of the amp right first before diving in to record it. Ive been using digital distortion also which is prob a big no no for getting good results.
