Hi there -
I'm a long-time musician (15+ years), but relatively new to the home recording process. I've just started buying some basic entry-level gear to see how I like it, and if I decide I want to do more then I'll buy up down the track. At this stage, I run very basic, using an M-Audio Fast Track USB pre-amp into a full copy of Mixcraft 5 that I borrowed off a friend (I have a lite version of ProTools M-Audio, but it's pretty limited), which I connect to both guitar and a microphone (SM-57). I also just bought an Alesis Control Pad, though am having latency troubles (which I think is more an issue with the fact my desktop computer is 4-5 years old and slugged down from the other 3 people that use and game on it).
In June I'll be moving to the UK to continue my studies, so will be buying a new laptop etc. over there. I was just wondering whether anyone could give me somewhere to start when it comes to inspiration for laptops. What I basically want is something that can function at least moderately well to produce music in my dorm on (nothing too professional, at this stage home recording is a hobby) but that will still be workable as a student PC (i.e. easy to use for 'proper' work like essay-writing, watching video, Skype, etc.). Price isn't a massive concern, but that said I don't want to be spending stupid amounts of cash.
I've used PCs all my life, and do prefer them to Macs (as in I find them easier for doing proper work/typing/etc. on), however am potentially open to the idea of one if recommended.
Any help would be really appreciated - if you need any more information please let me know!
Thanks
