I've made the decision to go with a PC instead of portastudio like Roland or Yamaha because of editing, ease of use of PC compared to portastudios, low cost of plug-ins compared to real compressors and FX, and a larger screen to work with. Anybody with advice for choosing amongst Digi 001 Protools LE, Cubase, Emagic Logic, Cakewalk; MOTU, Midiman, etc?
I did some analogue recording about 15 years ago with an analogue mixer and Otari 8 channel multitrack but nothing since then. I am not particularly computer literate and prefer ease of use and sonic quality over multiple, multiple tracks. My budget is several thousand $(US).
My goal is to record original music--rock, metal, blues, funk-- onto CDs at home with my own instruments and less frequently other musicians. I have bass, guitar, vocals, and will get eventually purchase a groove box for drums and MIDI keyboard or Roland guitar synth for keyboard sounds, horns, strings, etc.
(I would like to be able to record my drummer's Roland electric drum kit which means going to his place so I'll probably need an additional portable unit to take record his grooves for me.)
