Advice about "Stereo Guitar", etc?

I'm currently into the trick of stereoizing an instrument by running, say, a guitar into a delay unit with stereo outs, then running the clean out into one MD8 track, panning left, and then running the slightly delayed out into another MD8 track, and panning right (I've heard slight detuning, etc, could be used in place of delay).

An idea I had (and would like advice on before I attempt the wiring [and purchase of more wires]): could I use the FXSENDs to do this same thing, and thereby cut track usage in half? Could I record the intruments to their tracks, then pan them left, and then turn up the FXSEND that is only wired into the right return jack (or vice versa)?

Anyone try this or can anyone speculate if this will work?
Thanks much,
MP

I think the sound your looking for is actually from recording the same guitar section twice. Many times trying to use the delay gives you identical guitar on two tracks, the amount of delay can help you or hurt you. Ive found that Ive never been happy when trying it. I like the hear slight rhythmic variations that might come about from having 2 guitarists try the same thing. The manual I think covers this subject. Anyhow, I sense the Green Hornet may be posting here some help.

Peace,

Dennis,

Thanks for your help. I've been doing the split guitar thing lately and I personally like the effect/sound of it. I'm not a good enough guitarist to get the effect I'm going for (by doubling parts manually). Plus, I find that splitting the sound image full left and full right opens up the center for vocals and and bass.

I delay a slight bit so that my ears only hear it as two closely sync'ed parts. What I hope to do is sort of a layer of similar parts with different sounds (guitars, synth pads); then I hope to maybe have a backing guitar track in, maybe, 90% left, and a backing synth 90% right, etc. Something like that.

Whole lotta commotion.
:)

Thanks Dennis

Yo Perfecktion Man:

You might try taking a stereo 1/4 inch plug that sends to two mono 1/4 inch plugs.

I just got that cord last week and intend to use it to pipe music from tape and CD's into two tracks on the 2816. This will be background music for a singer I work with.

Just did some stuff on the 2816 and the sound is very good and I only mixed it to tape out the stereo outs on the back of the box.

Can't wait to record in 24 bit and mix that to tape through the stereo outs. Later on, I want to use the digital stereo outs whenever I get a DAT or something to send that signal into.

Great Day today in Michigan and Illinois.

Enjoy,

Hello again Mister Hornet!

Glad to hear you are enjoying the new box!

I am currently reading a new music book called Behind the Glass. Basically a bunch of new and old producers talking about their tips for recording and how it can relate to a home recording enthusiast. Pretty cool stuff. About $22 from Borders.com.

I've used that idea of your before, but that won't save me the tracks that I'm looking for...will it? I thought that I could use the slight delay as an FXSEND on a track panned hard left, but only plug in the right FX RETURN jack and pan the FX hard right. Would this give a "stereo" effect? Then maybe I could have two different "stereo" guitar parts taking up only 2 tracks instead of four.

I'm gonna probably try it soon. I'm only using one FXSEND now anyway, for my NanoVerb box, to use on vocal tracks and a little on the instrument.

Catch ya later, MP
