What advantages would there be If I bought a line 6 2.0 POD opposed to plugging an electric guitar straight into, say, an omni studio and then using software effects ?
Are Software effects just as good a standalone device such as a POD ?

The pod IS a software device. The difference is you'll have a number of different "tones" that way than you would running directly in, some better, maybe worse, and your impedence most likely correct. You would probably get the same sound from the Pod as you would from Ampfarm software, since its the same thing. But, unless you have ProTools or Digital Performer, it wont work for ya and you'll have to go Pod. Better yet, get a small decent combo and mic it :)

There's a DirectX amp simulator available called Revalver:

As for external boxes, there are several others that do the same job as the POD -- the Johnson J-Station, Yamaha DG Stomp, and others.

POD vs. Plugs

Recording clean and using plugs gives you the option of changing FX AFTER recording, no need to redo a take just because you had too much whatever on it.

Downside is plugins use CPU, the POD does its own signal processing.

I suppose you could buy the pod, record clean and use it in an aux FX bus, then you'd have it all???

Or better yet, split the signal, record 1 clean and 1 through the pod, that way if you need to you could change things, but if it is good, then you're done. (Also gives you the added advantage of having the clean signal to mix into the pod'd signal.)
