There´s one M-Audio card (Delta audiophile) that has the same converters of the delta 66 but the inputs and outputs are located in the pci card(rca)!
What´s the main advantages of a breakout box?

With a breakout box, the inputs are better shielded from interference. The hardware in your computer, hard drives, fans etc., will most likely induce some noise to the inputs on the card.

It's much easier to connect and disconnect cables too.

By the way, Jose, the Delta 66 converters are not in the breakout box but are on the card.

Re the difference between 1/4" and RCA jacks/plugs -- well, the 1/4" ones have a greater surface are of contact, so they should be somewhat better at transferring signals. The significant difference is that most musical gear will typically have 1/4" line outs and so ytou can connect these without adapters. Also there are balanced jacks/plugs and cables that you can use to get superior noise rejection -- the Delta's jacks are switchable between balanced and unbalanced depending on what you're plugging in.

Having a brreakout box is pretty essential really esp if you have an external mixer for routing all the output busses off the mixr into the soundcard. Trust me if you dont buy the brekaout box you will wish to had unless your recording needs are VERY basic indeed.

Thanks for replying! AlChuck, if the converters are in the card aren´t the signal suitable to noise and interference of hard drive as well?

The biggest advantage of having a breakout box is you don't have to crawl around behind your PC every time you want to change a connection.

Basically the A/D converters are subject to possible interference from everything in the box, Power Supply, CPU Fan, Chassis fan, Hard Drive, CD Rom, etc....

That's why Aardvark shields their converters on the card.

One would think so, but the Delta 66 is quiet as a mouse. I guess it depends on how the circuit is engineered. Maybe they are shielded, but not with a big ol' cover like the Aardvark has over their board...

I have the Hoontech audio dsp 24 and their 8 channel breakout box has the AD-DA converters onboard (6 feet or so from the PC).
Supposedly,as stated, that way is quieter than having it on the computer
Turning off the monitor during tracking can help eliminate some induced noise, also.
