ADK's

The TLs are wonderful mics for the price. ADK is an interesting newer (small) company, with a holistic and down to earth philosophy and attitude. Their product line has matured by now and most of their products are really excellent.

The TL seems rather versitile. I only say that because my recording is pretty much limited to just solo acoustic and classical guitar. It's rather neutral, with a bit of color. It takes various mic placements well, offering pleasing sounds with many mic placements (many other mics are not so "forgiving"). I have tried several ADK mics (TL, A-48, TT, Hamburg, Vienna and SC-2). I own an A-48. Very different mic.

For acoustic guitar, the TL is quite nice. The high end is present, and is clear and fairly unhyped. The mids are clear also, not much mud. The lows are fairly tight, and can get really tight with proper placement or pattern selection. Certainly a more pleasing sound to my ears than most other mics at this price point.

I would suggest checking them out for whatever uses you have. There are a couple of internet dealers with a return (if you don't like it) policy, so that's a win-win.

Since you mention the A48, another company sells that exact same mic under the name og SM pro audio MC-03.

The price is 40% lower, they might be selling the "51" series aswell for a cheaper price, check it out!

Good luck!

The MC-03 is not the same as an A-48. Both started as the same, but ADK did some mods to the capsule and the internal electronics that made it different. Power supply is of a different design too.

So what do you think about the MC-03? Aside from differences in design, what are the differences in character between the A-48 and MC-03? Opinion on which is the better mic? How does it compare to other solid state multi-pattern mics?

All the mics in the ADK Audiophile Series are designed by ADK . They're not knock-offs and they're not branded by any other company. The ADK TL is a transformerless 4-pattern mic. Excellent for acoustic instruments and vocals. The TL is uncolored and great for capturing imagery and detail.

A pair of ADK TL's and an ADK CE were used on the piano I recorded for a project. http://www.thelisteningsessions.com/jazzooo.htm
Download the "NY Blues" MP3 and have a listen.

gobblefisher, what are you recording? What other mics do you have?

This will be as a somewhat all round pair for guitar/vocal plus chamber ensemble in any of the various stereo techniques...

A pair of ADK TLs, which are relatively inexpensive, would do well. However, many would suggest a pair of SD omnis for the chamber ensemble work. I'd suggest another brand for SDs. Although I haven't heard them yet, the new Peluso SDs are getting initial good reviews.

What would those mods be, excatly?
Have you A/B'ed them?

It's not really a modification, per say. According to ADK, that copycat "A-48" out of England was not supposed to happen. The shell is the same, but the guts rather different. No, I haven't tried them side by side. Once ADK designed the A-48 to its desire, a shipment of mics using the same casing (but not the same internals) was shipped to England. Wasn't supposed to happen.

Comparison between the ADK Generis GT-2 and the MC-03?

Has anybody tried the ADK Generis line of mics? The GC-1 or GC-2. They are a little cheaper than SP B-1s.
