I pried off the screen from one of my SM81s so that I could pull out the slotted disk. The screen seemed to be glued in place, and came up with minor effort using a thumbtack as a pry-bar. All went well, except that the screen tends to fall off now that I put it back on. In other news, one of my MC-012 capsules has an outer ring that wants to slip off.

I'm thinking that some sort of adhesive or glue would be appropriate to hold the screen and the ring in place -- make sense? If so, what kind?

self conscious bump - last ditch effort to keep me from trying library paste!

Probably contact cement. You probably need to just put it in two or three spots so that it makes electrical contact most of the way around, though. Otherwise, the mic will likely hum massively.

That said, isn't there a way to get to the capsule without prying loose the screen in the first place? I've never tried it, but usually you would get to the capsule from behind, not from in front.

Thanks!!

I couldn't see a way to get to the front of the capsule (where the plastic slotted disk is/was) without pulling the screen. But if there is a way, then whoah-ho do I feel silly :D -- I'll look closer.

I should say that the screen stays on well enough for recording when you jam it in place, and there's no hum (and the HF response seems different and maybe better for my purposes). It's just when I put it up in the zipper bag that it falls off.

I've never disassembled an SM81, so I couldn't say for sure. Does the capsule unscrew from the body on those?

The capsule does easily unscrew from the body, but that doesn't help you get to where front of the diaphragm, where the black plastic disk is (immediately behind the grill) -- you can see the disk through the grill if you look in with a lot of light.
