how to?...

for example..I recorded my band playing recently, now I`d like to play along with the recording and add another track/recording to it, but i`ll be damned if I can figure out how..

thanks for any help!

Hey AL P,

Tracks which are record armed get recorded to and tracks which aren't just play back for your reference.
So....If you have a track with some music on it or whatever, create a brand new track, set your input, and hit record arm.

Now when you record+play in the main transport, your new track will be written to while your original one just being played back.

This isn't reaper specific; It's just general info.

I think his question was even simpler than that.

You create a new track by double clicking anywhere in the mixer area. ...then, follow Steen's advice.

well, the thing is, is I did "add a new track", then only selected/armed it..then clicked record..but for some reason, when i play it back, its a funky computer type sound..no idea how to describe....
could it be because I dont have my us-800 connected?..I`m just experimenting with how to do this right now..
is it an internal computer loop making the funky sound?

Hmm. I guess it would depend on how the track inputs and outputs are set up.
If you don't have the us800 plugged in, what source are you trying to record?

RAMI will be better for specifics. I think he's a reaper guy.

edit: And apparently a faster typer.

jeez I`m sounding like and idiot over here..and may in fact be one! LOL..
I`m not actually trying to record anything right now, but rather, just figure out how to do as mentioned above..

when I recorded my band last weekend, I recorded 5 tracks all at the same time using my Tascam us 800..
anyway, right now, the "input device" is blank in reaper, because my us 800 is not connected..its downstairs in our jam room and my computer is now back upstairs..

so basically, I`m setting here with headphones on listening to my band play back in reaper, and just trying to add a track, then click record..thinking it simply would not add any sound, but instead its adding a funky buzz sound..
is it that simple? I just need my input device connected???? OMG..lOL

There's really only one way to find out.
Awesome. You're in great company here. :D

LOL. Damn right he is!

The funky buzz is probably reaper recording from your (current) default input device which will be a built in microphone or a line input socket.
What were you expecting it to record, out of curiosity?
Are you sitting there singing into a mic that's not plugged in to anything, or something?

That sounds like I'm trying to get smart with you....I'm not.

LOL...no I just figured the new track would be silent..I was just trying to see if the other tracks would play (and I could hear them in my headphones) while the new track was visually recording..what I figured would be nothing/silence...was`nt expecting anything to be heard on the new track..

Ah, ok...testing the waters.

It's not uncommon for an unconnected input to give hiss or buzz, so I guess that's it.
In many DAWS it's not possible to record without choosing an input assignment.
That's why I'm thinking reaper has defaulted to whatever device you have.

Come to think of it, and not to complicate things.....But I'm surprised you were even able to open a project in REAPER without your US800 plugged in, let alone record. I remember getting a pop up screen telling me there's no input device before it opened a project. I think you can get by that screen, but then I didn't think it would let you record without the 800 plugged in.

Since you say you recorded yesterday, you must have already set REAPER to know your input device is the 800, so wouldn't that be "default" at this point? That's why I say I'm surprised you were able to open REAPER and hit record without getting at least some kind of pop-up warning.

(That was sort of off-topic to your problem, but I couldn't help wonder.....)

You might be right. I'm not sure how it works with reaper but any other programs I've used default to built-in audio unless it's disabled or something.
Protools does it even when you interface IS plugged in!

I can open it without any issue`s...but when my Tascam is not connected, the "input device" is just blank..(even if I click the drop down scroll, my tascam is not shown unless connected)
the output is my computers sound card..

now when i was using cubase, i`m pretty sure it would`nt open and would say what you mentioned?

P.S..I replaced my hard drive and mother board not long ago, and have never been able to re license cubase..hence going with reaper as of late..

Huh! Fair enough.

Well, if everybody learns something it's a good thread. :)

obviously still new to reaper..hence i named my band recording okayyyy edited maybe..LOL!!!

I left it recording the whole evening, so i had to cut out a lot of talking etc..was`nt sure if I got it correct or not..got lucky and i did..LOL

just to add...i only recorded for something to practice to..this is FAR from a good/correct master version anything..lOL

If I try to load Reaper without the firepod connected, I get a message telling me to check the devices. I can do that or just continue, and Reaper will load anyway.

If you try to record with no input device enabled, I'm not sure what you would get.

I haven't really tested it, but maybe Reaper is smart enough to recognise that your usual device is not present and to find something that will work.

Yeah, Gecko, I get the same message if I open Reaper but have forgotten to turn on my 18i20.

I don't know how the OP got to where he's at, because I just tried switching to "Wave Out" (whatever that is) from my normal "ASIO" selection, and it automatically fills in the "Input" and "Output" slots w/ "Microsoft Sound Mapper". Curious.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that you're on an "evaluation" version of Reaper, though I think that's unlikely.

Yes . . . unlikely. The evaluation version is uncrippled, except for the nag screen that comes up.
