Hey guys,
I would like to mic the drumset using 4 -5 mics using my Tascam 424 4 track recorder-- is there a way that I could hook up a (small) separate mixing board or mic mixer to my Tascam, and record all 4-5 drum mics on 1, or 2 channels of the Tascam

If so, what would be a good inexpensive 4-6 channel mixing board or mic mixer for this type of situation. . . preferably with balanced XLR mic inputs?

Any suggestions. . .Thank everyone!

Do you already have a PA for live situations?

You can use that as a mixer, especially if it is a two buss stereo PA or better, you can get a stereo mix of your kit, into two chanells on the 424, panned to two tracks.

No mixer

Unfortunately, I dont have a live mixer. . .But, that what I would like to use. . a small 3-4 channel (stereo) mixer to plug the drum mics into, . .then plug the that into the Tascam 424. .

any suggestions for a small, or mini 4 channel mixer . . .?
Thanks. . .

I know it's not everyone's favorite, but I've been doing exactly what you're talking about using a small Behringer Eurorack MX802A mixer, which has 4 XLR inputs, phantom power (if needed - I don't). I've used it for drums, in the way that you mentioned. Due to my laziness, I gave up on multiple mics on the drums, and just use two stereo overheads and a kick drum mic - and most of the time I've made do without the kick drum mic. The stereo overheads by themselves do the job just fine.

I found the mixer very useful for multiple mics on the guitar amp, which gave me a GREAT 3D sound! I used two close mics (57's) - one right up against the speaker, one back about a foot or less - both panned hard right and left. I then used two 58's up in the air on either side of the amp, back several feet, and panned hard right and left.

My laziness in drum miking was made up for by "over doing it" with the guitar mics. It also did NOT help that a suitable drummer could not be found for these sessions, which means that I played the drums myself, along with everything else.

For a sample listen go here, and then click on "Music" on the right side.
There are two songs from the sessions that I described above. "All I've Got To Say About Love", and "Long and Lonely Nights". All other songs posted are recorded under completely different circumstances. Hope ya like!

shudder

well, here is an idea that the experts are going to shudder over

your tascam technically has an 8 input mixer built into it. usually, (you dont say exactly which one you have) input 1,2,3,4 have xlr inputs, and 5,6,7,8 have 1/4 inputs.

using what you have you could put 8 mikes into the 424. might take an impedence matching transformer. i aint saying this is the best option in the world either. but if worse comes to worst.....it would work

you could also run 1 thru 4 in direct, and use a pre amp (even a cheap beheringer board) running in stereo for 5/6, and use the aux send for 7/8.

just some ideas on different way to accomplish what you need.

i have a beri 16 channel board. inputs 1 thru 8 have direct outs on it,ch 9/10 i assign to sub 1/2, ch 11/12 is assign to sub 3/4, ch 13 i assign to aux 1, ch 14 to aux 2, ch 15, to aux 3, and ch 16 to aux 4. so technically i have 16 totally separate mono channels i can run out of my board into a recorder.

there are many ways of doing thing. just learn the basics and learn to adapt.

good luck
