ADAT XT formating issues

Hello,

I recently picked up an Alesis ADAT XT intending to use it for some home recording. I knew the machine worked when purchased. I tried formatting two new S-VHS tapes and get the same issue after formatting is complete. Error 7 (dirty heads) and "no good timecode". I cleaned the heads carefully but the issue is still there.

Head hours = 420

The tapes I bought are from HHB and are labeled as 45 minutes which seems odd and is not one of the tape length choices in the XT's software.

I know this machine is ancient, but so am I and it was inexpensive to purchase.

Any thoughts from users experienced in the ancient art of ADAT technology?

Regards......

I don't think this helps with the formating, but see that the clock synch is set to internal. It sounds as if it's in slave mode looking for a timecode signal from a master deck.

are ya sure ya cleaned it properly?? it's easy to screw them up doing it wrong... and may have already been screwed...

Update

Thanks for the replies!

-Clock is set for 44K Int. That was my thought too!

-I hope I didn't screw the pooch with the cleaning. I am a bench tech and have worked on a bazzillion VHS machine years ago for a rental house and I was very carefull around the head. I also uses a high power magnifier to examine the heads, they look clean.

Any thoughts on the 45 minute tape or does that not matter in this instance?

Regards.....

dont think the length should matter much... iirc that simply does a minor change in tensioning for the take-up..

sometimes there is just enough crud on a guide or guides to keep the tape from making good contact with the head(s). go back and check for that. Could also be you have a bad batch of tapes. it happens.
