I posed this question before but nobody
responded. I have an adat and an alesis pcr
card which I use to download audio into my computer (with adat edit software and no problems). Is there any reason or advantage
for me to buy a pro sound card for direct
recording into the computer? You can listen
to the results I have been getting by going
to idrive.com and logging on as a guest at my site named ulsterlanding where there are
2 mp3s that i recored on adat and edited in
my computer downloading through the pcr card.
I have advised by friends that I need a sound
card but no one can tell me what the advantage would be.

well, I suppose if you got a good sound card, you would have all the advantages of computer editing. I think that would be worth it.

What sample rate and size does your ADAT support? How noisy is the PC when compared to the ADAT during tracking? You already have a path to the PC for multitrack editing, so the only reason I'd go with direct to PC would be a higher sample rate and size.

Adat sample rate 44100+48000, as for noise
etc., I don't know the answers to that. Is
it possible to get a medium priced sound card that will allow me to do the editing etc you are talking about? Do I have to buy one with
the 8 ins and outs etc. to be able to do this?

The number of ins and outs on the audio card really only impacts the number of channels you can record simultaneously.

So, if you were only ever going to be recording a couple of channels simultaneously, a 4x4 card would be adequate to your needs. If you were going to be recording more than that (say, a drum kit), you'd need a card with more inputs.

It's your computer and hard disk performance that affects how many channels you can effectively work with in your audio software.

Right now I have a 10 gig 7200 rpm hard
drive with 128 meg ram. I have a plextor
8/4/32 cd burner and a ensoniq creative labs
32 bit pci soundcard. I can use the adat to
come back out of the computer into my system
a mackie 1604vlz, phillips amp, and tannoy
monitors, can come out 8 channels via the
lightpipe through the pcr card to monitor the
playback. What else do you think I might need? I would like to get a larger faster
hard drive and another 128 ram chip.

Don't get anything if you don't know why.
You can record direct into your PC using the ad-converters in your ADAT (without taping). If you want more editing capability, get software that does what you want..
