ADAT to computer

Is it possible to transfer ADAT tracks to my computer in order to manipulate them for a mixdown? If so, which software would be the best? I have access to Soundforge, Cakewalk, Sonic Foundry Acid and Cool Edit Pro.

Alesis has a card called an ADAT-PC interface card or something. Its not a sound card but it sends the tracks from an ADAT to your computer to mix and process them via your PC.
Its around 300$ I think. You should talk to Sonusman about it since he just bought one and is having some trouble getting it to work. It says its like a virtual ADAT on your computer and adds 8 more tracks I think.
I know your able to send 8 tracks to the computer and then receive 8 tracks back out.
 
If I had it all to do over, I would have never bought the ADAT PCI card!!! Those pukes!!! No NT driver. The initial driver didn't work very well. The initial software didn't work very well.

You have to disable your other soundcard to use it!!! Try enabling, and disabling your other soundcard on a regular basis in 98/95. You will be having fun all the way to the reintall bank.

Spend the dough and get something that has the lightpipe I/O, and, some decent converters. You will definately be looking in the $600 and up range for this kind of card.

Be aware also that getting sample accurate transfers from an ADAT to a computer is a very tricky thing!!! Getting them back is just as tricky.

Also, you should be aware of issues concerning dithering before you go all hog wild on editing 16 or 20 bit tracks on your computer. Go to www.digido.com and read Bob Katz article about dithering. It opened my eyes to a lot of things about the average man's DAW that seem to be prevalent these days. I am counting my lucky stars that I can even record a 24 bit 48KHz file to the hard drive, edit and master it, and make it actually sound like it was all done in the 24 bit realm.

I bought the adat pcr card and the computer I was using at the time had an onboard sound chip. I had to disable it to use card then disable the adat card to use the onboard chip. Finally I bought a cheap
ensoniq sound card and installed it in the
computer and disabled the onboard soundchip
then I could use both the ensoniq card and the pcr card. I haven't had trouble downloading into the computer but have never
tried to download back into the adat yet.
I have two songs on idrive under username
ulsterlanding that I did with the adat and
the pcr card and mixed with adat edit, the
program you get with the card which is pretty
cheesy but its all I had to work with at the
time. Listen and judge the results, they
weren't that bad but then again i haven't any
expierience with anything else.
