ADAT sync cable

Hello, this is my first post at homerecording.com. Looks like a great site.

I tried to find the answer by searching the tech notes at alesis.com and by emailing alesis support. No luck.

Here's the deal:
I have 2xXT20 plus a DAW with card (RME Hammerfall) that has ADAT sync input. Using Cubase VST/24 3.72, I am able to achieve sample accurate timelock between the tape recorders and the DAW.
I have two questions:
a) Currently, I connect the second XT20 sync output to the audio card's sync input with a 3 foot cable. How long can the sync cable be. Is 30 feet still ok?
b) Can I use a standard good quality twisted pair 9-pin cable. Pins are connected pin-to-pin. Does this work ok?

I am planning a basement studio and all the noisy stuff will go into a ventilated 'machine room'. That includes the computer. However one has to see the adat meters and still have the sync cable connected to the audio card...

Regards
Ora
