ADAT question

I just bought a Digimax so that I could record more inputs at a time. The problem I am having is that I am getting tons of pops and clicks. I checked about 20 times to make sure they were on the same sample rate. I am just letting the digimax chase my digi rack instead of going through an external clock. So the only other thing I can think of is that maybe it's a loose cable?

If anyone has any suggestions please do tell because this is worrying me. I should say I bought this used as well.

Clicks/pops usually indicate a clocking problem.... all devices need to be clocked by the same master clock.... if you don't have a master clock, then one of the devices is not slaving reliably to the master, or more than one device thinks it's the master, causing the timing errors that produce the clicks.

In my DAW, if I turn off my Lucid wordclock, I get all kinds of clicks/pops in trying to sync my ADAT/HD24 to the DAW....

So am I correctly assuming that there isn't much I can do unless I buy an external clock? From what I read, there didn't seem to be to many problems dealing with this. Is there anything I can check to make sure that the digimax is correctly slaving to the digi? I'm just bummed because it's basically worthless if I have pops throughout the audio. So Blue Bear, are you saying I should just suck it up and start looking for a word clock?

I never figured out exactly WHY the clock issues occurred without wordclock at the time, but it could as simple as interference from too long a run (of optical cable) or the relative instability of the internal ADAT clock (as compared to the Lucid)... but I didn't worry about it because I was in the process of getting an external clock at the time anyways... when I wired the Lucid into the system, everything stabilized completely, so I would definitely encourage you to get a high-quality external clock...

Haha yes I just looked at my comments and had a few pretty funny negative feedback ratings. But very humourous so oh well. So how much would a good external clock cost me anyways? I would definitely try to get the cheapest one I could while still not producing pops and clicks.
