adapting SM58 to record onto PC??

I have never recorded directly onto my PC before. I've used either a PortaStudio or MR8 and then dumped WAVs onto the computer.

I want to experiment with going direct to the PC.

So, here's my question: Can I simply use my lo-Z to Hi-Z adapter and then a 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch adapter to be able to plug an SM58 into the computer? Or, do I need some sort of mixer or preamp in between??

This is not for the ultimate sound quality, just to allow me to record some parts and play around with the process.

Please help. I don't want to blow anything up or fry any equipment.

THANKS ALOT!!

if you have a soundcard with a mic in, yes it will work, but be careful with the volume......

if you still have the PortaStudio or MR8 it would be a lot better to use one as your preamp and then go into the line in of the soundcard.....alot of us here started that way......

thanks Gidge!

What a concept! Would you or anybody else be willing to elaborate on how I would use either of those as a preamp??
Like exactly how to route everything, etc...??

Sorry if that's a really basic question...which I know it is ;-)

I really didn't know that was an option. But it sounds like exactly what I'd like to try....with a bit of guidance.

Again, I don't wanna fry any gear!

I have an MR-8, and a Tascam 414 Portastudio, and I do have a soundcard with a mic in.

Any pointers are appreciated.

Thank you.

plug your mic into whatever one has the best preamps.....take the direct out/line out from it and plug into the line in of the card........

what type of cord is determined by which type of inputs your units have.....for instance , if the mixer/recorder has RCA outputs and the soundcard has 1/8" inputs, use a Dual RCA to 1/8" stereo wire.....

btw, this is perpectly safe.....

COOL!

I appreciate the speedy response. Thanks so much for the help.
I'll let ya know how it goes!
