ok, i am running ad aware, and norton antivirus both. somehow, a virus and adware still found its way into my computer. norton detects the virus, plus numerous dialer and adware files, but, it does not delete them. i scan again, finds the same files, says "delete failed". any ideas? i have this friggin toolbar every time i open IE. there is nowhere to "uninstall" it, or hide it. all of my toolbars under "view" are grayed out. help!?

I use adaware, spybot, antivir, and spyware blaster, all free. Maybe you could try one of those. Blaster keeps most spyware from getting on in the first place. Norton's been dissappointing, and it costs money.

most likly you are infected with something that cant be removed by you. You would need a pro. It sounds like a variant of Shop at Home Agent. This one with reinstall itself even after you delete it. Its a registered service that will be hard to shut down. I've tackled this one before and it's not one that I can guide you through. you can dowload a program called hijack this. run it. it will tell you what programs start when your pc starts. if you see some of the starting programs with a # followed by some random numbers then you have it. good luck getting rid of it. todays spyware is getting better at evading your anti-spyware.

I think spyware designers should be hung up by their 'nads. And then have Beezlebubba scratch them - with sandpaper!

But, hey, that's just my opinion.

Norton Antivirus is a bloated ineffective piece of shit. Get rid of it. AVG and Avast are both better, far less bloated, and free.

Another vote for Avast.
Great program that has stopped many viruses and trojans for me. And doesn't take up NEARLY the system resources that Norton or McAfee does. I refuse to use both of those.

--edit---
also, a lot of these virus programs (I know Avast does) have boot time virus scans, so you can scan your computer before Windows has a chance to launch the virus.

Boot up in safe mode then run NAV, adaware and spybot.

You may also want to checkout hijackthis and autoruns.

Also download Microsoft's beta spyware utl.

Agree, Norton is an ineffective ripoff. They have a great marketing team, after that forget about them.
AVG for antivirus, plus I recommend Ewido spyware killer. Both free.

Ewido gets rid of the stuff Adaware doesn't find, and the stuff spybot can't touch
