What's everyone using for AD/DA conversion here?

I use Steinberg's 96K 8I/O 16 channels of it.
Love it!

Apogee ADC's, and lately the DAC on the PreSonus Central Station. Surprisingly good sounding converters on that thing...

The funny part is that when I was interested in getting it, I didn't even know it HAD a DAC built in.

Lucid AD9624/DA9624 and the converters on-board the HD24......

Apogee Rosetta 800 and Benchmark DAC-1 for additional D/A.

I use RME Multiface converters. Would getting the Lucid 9624's be better than the Multiface converters, or not much improvment? I'm curious on the Presonus DA converter as well. Is it better than what I have?

How do both those D/A compare? benchmark by a landslide? very similar? completely different?

I was going to make this a poll, but I screwed up. :o
I've heard a lot about the Lucid convertors, I know Blue Bear uses them, but if I'm not mistaken, the only 8 channel they make is 48K. So to step up to 96K with the Lucid's, you have to do it in stereo pairs. Plus, isn't there no light-pipe interface on the Lucid's 96k's?

I believe the Steinberg 8I/O's are just re-packaged RME's. And to get the full advantage of the bit depth, you need to hit them with pretty hot levels. That may be true with all convertors.

As you all know, quality convertors are insanely expensive, so I'll be using what I have until technology rounds the next corner.

I was just curious what everyone else was using.

Well i was just looking for a 2ch. converter for in put and a 2 ch. converter for output for doing only 1 or 2 channel recording, plus maybe the wordclock is better on the Lucid and will help improve the RME multiface converters. Anyone know this?

Lynxtwo-C Clocked to Lucid GenX 96

Do you really notice much difference with the external clock? I thought the Lynx clock was pretty good...

Anyone compared the delta 1010 converters to rme or motu. I like my 1010, but I've been thinking about upgrading a few channels to something a little better.

Man, you guys are more cutting edge than me . . . I'm in the midst of the upgrade from 16 to 24 bit, so I just picked up an Alesis AI3 which is 24/48 I believe, I'm still not working at 96 or planning to soon, I just run a sample rate conversion to 96 if I need that. It should be a step up from the 20 bit converters I was using. I'll have to report back in a month or so when the new rack is all done.

Also I have the digimax LT which I suppose is pretty similar to the AI3.

my mixes started sounding better but that could just be because i am getting better as a mixer, but i planned on getting other digital gear anyway and the lucid was at a good price

Oh, BTW I'm using a LynxTwo A and thinking about adding another 2 ch A/D. Thinking Lucid AD9624 at the moment....

i don't think thats a step up more like side ways and maybe a step down but this is all from hearsay on the net so who knows...i'd personally look at the mytek, benchmark, lavry stuff....1K range

I still love the convertors on my Radar Nyquist Project 24. If you can find one used it's by far the best bang for buck you can get on 24 channels. Plus you get the HDR for free.

I have an Aardvark Q10...and I'm wondering how much I'd have to spend to get a significantly better sound. I love the Aardvark...but then again I haven't really heard any high quality convertors like apogee. I know the clock is supposed to be pretty good on the Aardvark. Should I hold off for a while on new convertors?

They are both excellent and perform more than adequately. On the D/A side, the DAC-1 just get's the edge, particularly when working off 24/96, but they are both excellent.
In my office I have a Motu 828 slaved to a Lucid clock and that is quite nice too, but not in the Apogee and Benchmark league.

An iZ Technologies "RADAR-24" with Nyquist converters for the multi-track conversion and a Lavry Blue series for 2 mix A/D and as our general D/A... sometimes I'll use a Crane Song LTD. HEDD-192 for the 2 mix A/D conversion... it kinda depends on the song and what the artist is looking for from their sound.

We'll be trying out the Prism's in the near future... that should be pretty interesting.
